Hedgehogs are what we call Skinks here I think Wendy; they spray you when they feel threatened and it stinks lol.

No they're little spiny critters. A bit like mini echidnas. Harmless apart from carrying fleas and ticks.

This is a Hedgehog Martha.  (Length of head and body is ~160 mm (6.3 in) at weaning, increasing to 260 mm (10 in) or more in large adults. Wiki)

And I've always found this interesting - Colonists took hedgehogs from England and Scotland to New Zealand on sailing ships from the 1860s to the 1890s mainly for sentimental reasons. Few survived the 4-6 month voyage, but those that did had lost all their fleas.

I always thought it was Australia they took them to, but reading up today I see it's New Zealand.

They are harmless little creatures and we love them here.  Many people put or build little hedgehog homes at the bottom of their garden and a hedgehog will always take up residence.

They come out at twilight and in the country, such as when I lived on the caravan site, you can see them scuttle around all the time.

If they feel under threat they will curl themselves into a spikey ball.  Their spikes are their only protection.

Ah yes Sandy now that I see the image I realise I was wrong with the hedgehog description.

Looks like a young kitten Martina.

Are you talking about the hedgehog or about Martina's lovely little kitten?

The hedgehog, I think, Is the most gorgeous of our wild life and one of the most loved.  It's so funny though when walking passed one at night, instead of it scuttling away it will just roll up in a ball and hope you don't see it.

When I lived in a caravan and came home late evening you could bet your life there was one or two all curled up by my steps where it/they had heard me coming.

Now I envy the Australians with all their lovely birds.  It must be amazing to see such colours in birds from your window.

It truly is an amazing sight Sandy and I see white and black cockatoos and rainbow lorikeets every single day here. Smile

I hear the Kookaburras from across the park too.

We used to have hedgehogs in the garden and I had to build them a home in the woodland at the front because they kept using the warm compost heap at the back. That was fine until one of my young dogs decided curled up creatures were meant to be used to play football with.

That's interesting about the fleas Sandy. I wonder why.

I find it strange too because fleas can usually survive in all temps and weather conditions. It's many, many years since I first read about it, so I forget why.

I suppose it could have been the salty air conditions. I know it did have something to do with the atmospheric conditions on such a long journey.

I can imagine Martha. Our birds whilst they do have colours, one can't really see those colours unless up close. Our bird are very dull to look at in comparision to yours.

I've been meaning to do the same. But then I'm not in as nice an area living here as I was. Once I get back to my own manor I will do some more videos also.

I kept meaning to make a video when on the trike going through the lanes and farms.
