Browsers and their Safety Empty
PostSubject: Browsers and their Safety   Browsers and their Safety EmptyThu May 04, 2017 1:31 pm

How safe is the browser you use for accessing the internet?

Do you use more then 1 browser and do you really know how safe they are?

I am always researching these kind of things as I know a lot can change in a short time when it comes to changes within internet browsers.

Some changes are understandable and others you wonder why no one is making an effort to keep their clients of many years. Why don't they employ someone who can keep it safe; while at the same time keep the browser working with all features intact!

I've come across a few items that I want to share with those of you who might be interested and I will post them in separate replies.

Browsers and their Safety Empty
PostSubject: Browsers and their Safety   Browsers and their Safety EmptyThu May 04, 2017 4:10 pm

There are quiet a few browsers out there for accessing the internet.

People are still using Internet Explorer (IE 11 is the last one)

The new Microsoft one called Edge - this replaced the old IE with windows 10.

Then there is:
Chrome
FireFox
Pale Moon
Safari
Opera
Vivaldi

and more that I can't think of right now.

More and more changes are happening in some browsers; such as FireFox no longer supporting plugins such as Java or Adobe Acrobat. They ended the support for that in version 52.
In it's place now has come
a web API which stands for Application Programming Interface.

It's supposed to make browsing online safer and faster and I guess in one way they are right, but on the other hand I question the accuracy of that.

With more and more people owning a smart phone and/or tablet and using that to browse the internet; it has opened a mine field with possibilities of a different kind.

We can now have our computers, laptops, tablets, e readers and phones all synced. Yes I know that makes it so easy to have everything handy and up to date no matter what device we use, but ... how much personal data do we hand over for that handy option?

Having a varied amount of browsers to our choosing is one thing, but what search engine do you use?

How safe is that search engine?

How much data does it hold onto?

How much data does it pass on to third parties and/or government bodies?

The main search engines that come to mind are:
Google
Bing
Yahoo

The main privacy protecting search engines:
Duck Duck Go
StartPage

Browsers and their Safety Empty
PostSubject: Re: Browsers and their Safety   Browsers and their Safety EmptyThu May 04, 2017 4:12 pm

Google's pages of information regarding what it collects and shares from you the user is astounding! Far from me to even try and copy it all down here; do yourself a favour and have a look at just a few pages, such as ...
https://privacy.google.com/intl/en/your-data.html and scroll down the page and see for yourself.

Competitors of Google include Baidu and Soso.com in China; Naver.com and Daum.net in South Korea; Yandex in Russia; Seznam.cz in the Czech Republic; Yahoo in Japan, Taiwan and the US, as well as Bing and DuckDuckGo.

Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. The service has its origins in Microsoft's previous search engines: MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing replaced Live Search in 2009.

Yahoo Search became its own web crawler-based search engine in 2003. Their relationship with Google was terminated at that time, with the former partners becoming each other's main competitors.
In January 2010, Microsoft announced a deal in which it would take over the functional operation of Yahoo! Search, and set up a joint venture to sell advertising on both Yahoo! Search and Bing known as the Microsoft Search Alliance. A complete transition of all Yahoo! sponsored ad clients to Microsoft adCenter (now Bing Ads) occurred in October 2010.
In October 2015, Yahoo subsequently reached an agreement with Google to provide services to Yahoo Search through the end of 2018, including advertising, search, and image search services.

So even though Google, Bing and Yahoo are competitors; they also provide and share data/details with each other.

Some smaller search engines offer facilities not available with Google, e.g. not storing any private or tracking information; one such search engine is Ixquick.
Ixquick is the search engine of StartPage.

The main privacy protecting search engines:
Duck Duck Go
StartPage

DuckDuckGo (DDG) is an Internet search engine that emphasizes protecting searchers' privacy and avoiding the filter bubble of personalized search results. DuckDuckGo distinguishes itself from other search engines by not profiling its users and by deliberately showing all users the same search results for a given search term.

DuckDuckGo emphasizes getting information from the best sources rather than the most sources, generating its search results from key crowd-sourced sites such as Wikipedia and from partnerships with other search engines like Yandex, Yahoo!, Bing, and Yummly.

The main part I could find against DuckDuckGo is the fact that it's based in the USA.

Services based in the United States are not recommended because of the country’s surveillance programs, use of National Security Letters (NSLs) and accompanying gag orders, which forbids the recipient from talking about the request. This combination allows the government to secretly force companies to grant complete access to customer data and transform the service into a tool of mass surveillance.

If you want to know more about online privacy and how data/details are shared, you can read up on it here ....

PostSubject: Re: Browsers and their Safety   Browsers and their Safety EmptyWed May 10, 2017 6:30 am

StartPage and 10 ways it helps you take back your privacy:

  1. StartPage doesn't store your IP address, use tracking cookies, or make a record of your searches.
We do not keep any information about the people who search through StartPage or what they search for. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
  2. StartPage protects you from NSA surveillance and spying.
Your search session with StartPage is protected through powerful SSL encryption so no one - not hackers, not your ISP, not even the federal government - can eavesdrop on your searches. (Read more here)
  3. StartPage gives you 100% real Google results in complete privacy.
When you search with Startpage, we remove all identifying information from your query and submit it anonymously to Google for you. We get the results and return them to you in total privacy.
  4. StartPage is a Dutch company, so it is not under US jurisdiction.
Because our company is based in the Netherlands, US data collection programs like PRISM, the Patriot Act, FISA courts, etc. do not directly apply to us. We have never cooperated with spying programs like PRISM. (Plus we have no user data to begin with.)
  5. StartPage offers a free proxy with every search.
With our proxy, not only can you search privately, but you can view the pages you find through StartPage anonymously and in complete security. To learn more, please see our short overview video here.
  6. StartPage is third-party certified for privacy.
We not only promise our users total privacy, we back up those claims with rock-solid evidence, through stringent third-party auditing and certification. Here are details:
How can your privacy policies be verified? Can users trust StartPage to do what it says?
    https://support.startpage.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/8/0/how-can-your-privacy-policies-be-verified-can-users-trust-startpage-to-do-what-it-says
What auditing and review does your Europrise certification process involve?
    https://support.startpage.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/9/0/what-auditing-and-review-does-your-europrise-certification-process-involve
  7. StartPage has been doing privacy longer than anyone else - since way before privacy was "cool".
Our company was founded in 1999, and we've been focused on privacy since 2006. (We introduced the StartPage search engine in 2009.)
  8. When it comes to security, StartPage runs the tightest ship on the Internet.
We've been ahead of the privacy curve for years, and we consistently outscore other search engines on independent measures of security. We were the first search engine to offer default SSL encryption, and now we are the first private search engine to offer Perfect Forward Secrecy and the latest version of Transport Layer Security.
  9. StartPage breaks you free of the search engine "Filter Bubble".
Major search engines now "personalize" or "pre-screen" the search results they serve you, based on what they know about you from past searches and other services you use. While some people love this, others see it as privacy-invading censorship. Regardless of your views, with StartPage, you get clean, anonymous, non-filtered results every time, because nobody knows who you are.
  10. By using StartPage, you send a powerful pro-privacy message in the marketplace.
Each time you use an online service, you cast a vote in support of the policies and practices of that service. By using StartPage, you are casting a powerful vote for a private Internet where people can access information anonymously without fear of government surveillance or reprisal.

You're welcome Spice Smile

I just think it's important that we know what we're in for when it comes to online safety because more and more features are coming online and with that comes more traffic and of course more chances of being/getting spammed; data stolen and so forth.

With these posts I am not trying to tell anyone where to go or what to use ... merely show that there are different options to consider!
